RV Generator Financing
Finance RV generators for Class A motorhomes, fifth wheels, travel trailers, and commercial RVs. $50k minimum deal, B/C credit OK, funded in 1-2 weeks.
Full-timers, weekend warriors, and commercial operators who run RVs as mobile offices, command centers, or event support units all share the same basic problem: shore power is not always where the work is. An RV generator, whether a chassis-mounted unit drawing from the vehicle's fuel tank or a portable set secured in the storage bay, is the difference between a fully functional rolling workspace and a vehicle that needs to find a hookup within 24 hours. For the buyers who use RVs commercially, that distinction matters enough to justify a financed purchase rather than a rental every time the job moves.
Our RV generator financing program is built primarily around commercial and fleet buyers: RV rental companies, production companies running mobile broadcast and event units, emergency response organizations with command-center vehicles, and dealers adding generator packages to new Class A or Class B+ inventory. Individual buyers are welcome, but our $50,000 minimum means we are best suited for transactions that include the generator as part of a larger financed package or for buyers acquiring multiple units. Fund in one to two weeks. B or C credit is acceptable.
Commercial RV Generator Buyers
RV rental companies are among the more consistent buyers of generator-equipped RV inventory. A rental fleet of Class A motorhomes needs reliable generator systems because rental customers expect to boondock (camp without shore power) as part of the experience, and a generator failure mid-trip produces a significant customer service problem. Fleet owners acquiring new or used generator-equipped motorhomes can finance the generator as part of the RV transaction or as a standalone generator addition to existing inventory.
Mobile production and broadcast operations run customized RVs and coaches as mobile studios, edit suites, and production command centers. A 40-foot Super C or coach converted for broadcast production may have 30 to 50 kilowatts of generator capacity to power cameras, edit workstations, satellite uplinks, and air conditioning for technical crew. Those generator systems are purpose-spec'd, often Cummins Onan or Kohler commercial coach units, and they represent a significant portion of the vehicle conversion cost. We have funded production-vehicle generator packages as part of larger vehicle financing transactions. See the events and entertainment production industry page for more context on how we approach those deals.
Emergency response agencies and law enforcement with mobile command vehicles need generators that can run 48 to 72 hours continuously without refueling stops, which drives demand for large under-floor chassis-mounted units with extended fuel capacity. FEMA disaster response, state emergency management agencies, and private emergency response contractors all use generator-equipped command vehicles. The generator is often the most critical and most expensive single component in the vehicle conversion. We finance those generator systems for both public agencies and commercial emergency response contractors. Our emergency services and disaster response financing page has more detail.
RV Generator Types and Brands
Chassis-mounted RV generators are the dominant type in Class A and Class C motorhomes. These units mount in a dedicated compartment underneath the vehicle, connect to the main fuel tank (diesel or gasoline depending on the chassis), and produce 4 kW to 12.5 kW of 120V or 120/240V power for rooftop air conditioners, microwave ovens, and other onboard 120V loads. Cummins Onan is the dominant brand in this segment, with the MicroQuiet 3600, 4000, and 5500 diesel and gasoline series covering the mainstream motorhome market. Kohler's RV generator line and Generac's Guardian series also appear in factory-installed applications.
Commercial-grade coaches and converted vehicles often use higher-capacity units in the 10 kW to 30 kW range, frequently diesel, from Cummins Onan's Commercial Mobile series or from Kohler's industrial mobile product line. These units are substantially more expensive than consumer-grade chassis-mounted sets, and they are the units most commonly financed as separate equipment purchases rather than as part of a vehicle note.
Portable RV generators are a separate category, covering the transfer-switch-equipped portable sets that RV owners place outside the vehicle for boondocking. Honda, Yamaha, Champion, and Westinghouse dominate this consumer space at price points that rarely meet our financing minimum. For commercial buyers using heavy-duty portable sets in the 7,500 watt to 12,000 watt range from Cummins Onan or equivalent, particularly when multiple units are acquired together, the transaction can reach our threshold. Alternatively, when portable generators are bundled with a trailer-mounted application, they can be part of a towable generator transaction.
How the Financing Works for RV Generators
The most practical path for most RV generator financing is bundling the generator with a larger transaction. An RV dealer adding a Cummins Onan diesel generator to a new or used motorhome as a dealer add-on, and then offering the customer a monthly payment that covers the full configured vehicle, can use our commercial financing program to structure that deal. A production company buying a coach conversion where the generator is one of several high-value components in the conversion package can finance the whole conversion as a single equipment transaction.
For standalone RV generator purchases above our $50,000 minimum, the underwriting process is the same as for any other generator: credit application, three months of business bank statements, and a quote for the equipment being purchased. We do not require that the generator be installed in a vehicle at the time of purchase; chassis-mounted units ordered through a dealer or distributor for installation in an existing vehicle qualify the same as factory-installed units. Our application-only financing program covers RV generator transactions under $400,000 without requiring tax returns.
For companies building out a commercial RV fleet with generator packages, a fleet credit line allows multiple vehicles or generators to be financed under one master approval. That approach is faster and less paperwork-intensive than individual applications on each acquisition. Contact us about fleet program availability if you are acquiring three or more units in a twelve-month period. We also finance portable generators as part of multi-unit purchases that meet the minimum threshold.
Questions About RV Generator Financing
Straight answers before you send the generator file.
Can I finance an RV generator separately from the motorhome it will be installed in?
Yes. The generator is separate collateral from the vehicle. We lien the generator on its own serial number. The vehicle can be financed separately through an RV lender, or it can be an existing asset you already own. The generator stands alone as equipment collateral.
I run an RV rental fleet and want to add generator-equipped units to my inventory. How does that work?
RV rental fleet generators finance the same way as any commercial equipment fleet. We look at your business revenue, your existing fleet size, and the units you are acquiring. A fleet credit line or individual unit financing both work. The generator can be financed as part of the vehicle purchase or as an add-on to existing fleet units.
The RV generator I need is a Cummins Onan diesel that costs $18,000 installed. That is below your minimum. What can I do?
Individual consumer-grade RV generators below $50,000 fall under our minimum. The most practical path is bundling the generator with other equipment you need, whether it is additional rental fleet vehicles, other power equipment, or accessories that collectively bring the financed amount above $50,000. Alternatively, if you are financing the motorhome itself through a different lender, the generator may be rollable into that note.
Can I finance a generator for a mobile command center that is classified as a specialty vehicle?
Yes. Specialty vehicles including mobile command centers, mobile broadcast units, and similar commercial conversions can have their generator systems financed as equipment. We focus on the generator as the collateral, not the vehicle classification. Specialty vehicle conversions often have higher-capacity generator systems that clear our minimum on their own.
My generator is a used commercial Cummins Onan I found at a dealer. Can I finance a used unit?
Used commercial-grade Cummins Onan and Kohler units in good condition are financeable. We need the model number, serial number, current hours on the unit, and documentation of its condition. A dealer or distributor selling the unit is the easiest path; private-party purchases work too with proper documentation.
