Diesel Generator Financing

Diesel Generator Financing

Finance diesel generators from $50k up. New or used, B/C credit considered, funding paced to the completed file. Get a quote on your kW requirement today.

Diesel is still the dominant fuel for standby and prime power because the physics haven't changed: compression-ignition engines tolerate load swings, cold starts, and years of infrequent demand better than almost any alternative. A hospital in Tampa or a data center in Ashburn doesn't care about fuel cost per hour when the grid goes down at 2 a.m. It cares that the engine fires in 10 seconds and holds frequency. Diesel generators do that reliably from 20 kW to 3,000 kW, which is why they sit behind almost every critical facility in the country.

We finance diesel gensets from $50,000 up, new or used, Tier 4 Final or pre-Tier 4 depending on your jurisdiction and runtime expectations. B and C credit are fine. Most deals fund inside one to two weeks. Application-only underwriting up to approximately $400,000 means no tax returns, no financial statements: three months of bank statements, a one-page app, and a description of the set.

The commercial diesel generator market covers a wide range of ratings and configurations. At the low end, a 60 kW to 100 kW open-frame or enclosed unit handles small commercial buildings, telecom shelters, and agricultural facilities. These run $25,000 to $80,000 new, often more when you add a automatic transfer switch and sub-base fuel tank. From 150 kW to 500 kW, you're in the sweet spot for manufacturing, mid-size healthcare, and larger commercial facilities. New sets in this range typically run $80,000 to $350,000 installed, which lands squarely in our most common deal size.

Above 750 kW, you're dealing with prime-rated industrial iron: CAT 3516, Cummins QSK60, MTU Series 4000. These units power data centers, petrochemical plants, and large utility substations. Prices range from $400,000 to well over $1 million for a packaged set. We finance these too, though the underwriting requires more documentation. Used equipment in this tier can cut acquisition cost by 40 to 60 percent, and we finance used diesel generators at the same rates as new when condition and service records are solid.

Tier 4 Final emissions compliance is required for any set that logs more than 100 hours of non-emergency runtime per year in most U.S. jurisdictions. If your application is genuine emergency standby (hospitals, data centers, life-safety), Tier 4 requirements are often waived, giving you access to a larger pool of lower-cost used equipment. Worth confirming with your local air district before you buy.

A new diesel generator from a major OEM comes with a factory warranty, current emissions compliance, and a known service history of zero. The premium is real: a 500 kW Cummins C500D5 will run $200,000 or more packaged. The advantage is predictable maintenance costs and the ability to match current paralleling control systems without adapter hardware.

A used set, properly inspected and load-bank tested, can deliver the same standby capability at 40 to 60 cents on the dollar. The risk is what you don't know about the cooling system, the injectors, and the block hours. We recommend buying used only when you have a generator technician's commissioning report and a recent load-bank test certificate. We'll finance either configuration. For used sets above $150,000 we typically require a condition inspection; below that, strong bank statements and a purchase contract are usually enough.

Sale-leaseback is worth knowing about if you already own diesel sets free and clear. We can appraise the equipment, pay you the market value, and lease it back to you on a multi-year term. That converts a dormant asset into working capital without displacing the generator from its pad. Construction contractors who own prime-power generators between projects use this structure regularly.

Our $50,000 floor covers the majority of commercial diesel genset purchases. The sweet spot for most buyers is $100,000 to $500,000, which is where we see the most competitive pricing and the fastest approvals. Above $500,000 we still fund, but expect a deeper financial review and slightly longer timelines.

Terms typically run 24 to 84 months depending on equipment age, deal size, and your credit profile. Shorter terms lower total interest cost; longer terms lower the monthly payment. For standby equipment that rarely runs, longer terms often make sense because the machine's useful life extends well beyond the loan period. A 20-year-old diesel genset in good condition still holds substantial value.

We structure purchases, finance leases (dollar-buyout), and operating leases depending on your tax situation and balance-sheet preferences. If you're planning to take a Section 179 deduction on the purchase, a loan or dollar-buyout lease keeps the asset on your books. If off-balance-sheet treatment matters, an operating lease may be the better structure. We can walk through both with your accountant on the same call.

The buyers we fund most often fall into a few clear categories. Electrical contractors who self-perform generator installations often purchase a unit for a specific project and need funding that closes before the install date. Hospitals and healthcare systems adding backup power capacity to meet Joint Commission requirements. Data center operators adding N+1 redundancy before a capacity expansion. Oil and gas operators running prime power at remote wellhead sites where grid power isn't available.

We also fund rental companies adding diesel sets to their fleet. A 200 kW towable diesel renting at $800 to $1,200 per week pays for itself inside 18 months at moderate utilization. Financing 70 to 80 percent of the purchase price while the unit earns rental revenue is a straightforward business case.

Municipalities and public-sector agencies finance diesel generators too, though government transactions typically require separate documentation. We handle those under our equipment loan structures designed for public entities.

Tell us the kW rating, fuel type, new or used, and your timeline. We'll have a quote back to you the same business day. $50,000 minimum, B and C credit considered, funding paced to the completed file for most transactions.

Questions About Diesel Generator Financing

Straight answers before you send the generator file.

Can I finance a diesel generator that's 10 to 15 years old?

Yes. Age matters less than condition and service history. A 15-year-old Caterpillar or Cummins set with documented maintenance and a recent load-bank test is fundable. We may require a condition inspection on older equipment above $100,000. Sets with no service records or unknown block hours are harder to place but not impossible.

My facility needs the generator on-site in three weeks. Is that realistic?

For deals under $400,000, application-only processing typically runs five to ten business days from app to funding. Three weeks is achievable if you have your three months of bank statements ready and a clear purchase contract. Longer timelines usually come from incomplete documentation, not from our side of the desk.

Can I finance both the generator and the automatic transfer switch as one deal?

Yes. We finance the complete packaged system including the ATS, sub-base fuel tank, enclosure, and installation costs in many cases. Soft costs like permits and engineering are sometimes includable depending on the lender. Let us know the total project scope and we'll structure accordingly.

I already own two diesel generators free and clear. Can I pull equity out?

That's a sale-leaseback. We appraise the sets, pay you their market value (typically 50 to 70 percent of replacement cost for well-maintained equipment), and structure a lease back to you. The generators stay on your pad and you get cash in hand. Most sale-leasebacks close in two to three weeks.

Does my credit score matter if the business has strong cash flow?

Credit score is one input. Bank statements showing consistent revenue and adequate cash reserves matter equally or more. We've funded B and C credit borrowers with solid operating history regularly. A score in the mid-500s with three months of clean bank statements and a clear business case is often sufficient.
