Propane (LP) Generator Financing
Finance propane (LP) generators from $50k. Standby and prime power, rural or suburban sites, B/C credit OK, funding paced to the completed file.
Propane is the generator fuel of rural America. Where natural gas mains don't reach, LP solves the supply problem that would otherwise force a diesel logistics operation. A 500-gallon or 1,000-gallon LP tank on a rural property provides enough fuel for days of standby runtime without any delivery infrastructure beyond a scheduled fill. For farms, rural hospitals, emergency management facilities, and off-grid commercial properties, propane generators cover the gap between diesel and natural gas alternatives.
The engine technology is the same as natural gas: spark-ignited (for most LP generators) or compression-ignition diesel-conversion, with LP as the primary fuel. Major OEMs including Generac, Kohler, Cummins, and Briggs Stratton produce LP-configured standby and prime-power sets from 20 kW to several hundred kilowatts. Generac's GP and XP portable series, the Kohler residential and light commercial lines, and the Cummins RS series all offer factory LP configurations. Larger industrial LP sets from Caterpillar and others are less common but available for specific applications.
We finance propane generator systems from $50,000 up, including the generator, LP tank, and ATS when bundled as a single installation. New or used, B and C credit welcome. Most deals fund in one to two weeks once we have a complete application. Rural properties don't disqualify you; the generator is the collateral, not the address.
Propane has a specific application profile. It wins over diesel in three situations. First, where long fuel storage is a concern: diesel degrades in storage and requires additives or polishing after six to twelve months. LP, being a gas stored under pressure, has essentially unlimited storage life. A rural facility that runs its generator infrequently can let an LP tank sit without fuel degradation worry.
Second, in regions with strict diesel emissions permitting. LP burns significantly cleaner than diesel, and the emissions permitting threshold for LP generators in air quality management areas is generally more permissive than for diesel. This makes LP attractive for facilities in non-attainment areas that need more than emergency standby runtime.
Third, for applications where fuel delivery logistics are a genuine constraint. LP can be delivered by any licensed propane supplier from a standard bobtail truck. No specialized diesel purification truck required, no Tier 4 compliance certification for the fuel, no spill containment complexity beyond what a standard LP installation requires.
LP loses to natural gas on per-BTU fuel cost and loses to diesel on energy density (LP requires roughly 1.5 times the volume of diesel to deliver equivalent energy output). For facilities on the gas main with reliable utility service, natural gas generators are usually the more economical choice. For rural sites and suburban properties without gas service, LP is often the best available option.
Agricultural operations across the Midwest and Southeast run LP extensively. Grain dryers, irrigation pump houses, and farm buildings have used LP infrastructure for decades, and adding a propane generator integrates naturally. Buyers in those markets should also look at our coverage of agricultural generator financing.
A propane generator installation involves several cost components. The generator itself. The LP tank (which may be owned, rented from the propane supplier, or financed). The automatic transfer switch. Gas pressure regulator and supply piping. Concrete pad, electrical rough-in, and commissioning. We can finance the generator and the ATS as hard equipment under a standard equipment loan or lease. The LP tank, if purchased rather than rented, can sometimes be included in the same deal when it's part of a single contractor's project.
Rented LP tanks are common and don't need to be financed; the supplier bills monthly for the tank and delivery service. When the tank is owned and part of the capital purchase, it adds to the deal size and the loan is secured against both the generator and the tank as a system. Permitting, installation labor, and site prep are soft costs that some lenders will include and others won't. Let us know your total project cost and we'll structure accordingly.
For deals under $400,000, application-only underwriting handles most propane generator transactions. Three months of business bank statements, a one-page application, and a purchase contract or contractor quote. Larger projects require business financials. Either way, the timeline from complete application to funding runs one to two weeks for most buyers.
If you're financing a propane standby generator for a commercial property, the deal structure is identical to any other commercial standby purchase. The fuel type doesn't change the documentation or the timeline.
Rural and agricultural borrowers sometimes have thin business credit because operations are run through personal accounts or because the business has few trade lines on record. That's a common profile in our book and we work around it. Strong personal credit, solid bank deposits, and a clear business description usually get a deal done even when the business credit report is sparse.
Ag operators, rural contractors, and property owners using propane generators often have seasonal income patterns. LP generator financing for a farm operation may need to account for a payment schedule that aligns with harvest income rather than a flat monthly structure. Seasonal or deferred-payment financing can match payments to the cash-flow calendar rather than a bank's preferred uniform monthly schedule. Ask us about seasonal structures when you apply.
We've funded propane generator deals for church campuses, rural health clinics, hunting lodges, agricultural co-ops, and water treatment facilities in areas without grid-connected natural gas. The common thread is a real operational need for reliable power and a business that generates consistent revenue. Credit blemishes from the 2008 recession, COVID-era slowdowns, or a rough season don't automatically disqualify you. Show us the bank statements and we'll work the deal.
Tell us the kW requirement, whether the LP tank is included in the purchase, and your timeline. Prompt quotes on most deals. $50,000 minimum, rural and agricultural borrowers welcome.
Questions About Propane (LP) Generator Financing
Straight answers before you send the generator file.
Can I finance both the propane generator and the LP storage tank together?
Yes, when they're purchased as part of the same installation project. We treat the generator as the primary collateral and can include the LP tank and ATS in the same deal when they're covered under a single purchase contract or installation agreement. Rented LP tanks don't need to be included since they're not capital equipment.
The generator I want is spec'd for natural gas but I need it to run on propane. Does conversion affect financing?
Natural gas and LP use the same engines; the conversion involves a pressure regulator change and in some cases carburetor jetting. Factory LP configurations are preferable, but a properly documented gas-to-LP conversion by a qualified technician doesn't disqualify the unit from financing. Have the conversion documented in writing before purchase.
I'm buying a used propane generator from a commercial property being demolished. Can I get financing on that?
Private-party and salvage-source purchases are fundable when the equipment has clear documentation. A bill of sale showing the unit's make, model, serial number, and condition, along with any available service records, is the starting point. For units above $100,000, we may require a condition inspection or load-bank test certificate.
My farm runs on LP for everything and I want to add a 100 kW generator. Is $100,000 too small for your program?
That's right in our sweet spot. We fund from $50,000 and our application-only process handles most transactions in that range without needing your tax returns. Three months of bank statements and a one-page application is usually sufficient.
Is propane generator financing available for a church or nonprofit?
Nonprofits and religious organizations qualify for equipment financing, though underwriting may differ from a for-profit business. Some lenders have specific nonprofit programs. We'll match your deal to the right lender. Documentation typically includes articles of incorporation or nonprofit status verification along with the standard bank statements.
