Pipeline gas doesn't run out. That single fact drives the choice for thousands of facilities that sit on a gas main and can't afford fuel-logistics headaches. A natural gas generator eliminates the diesel delivery schedule, the day-tank monitoring, the fuel polishing costs, and the EPA spill liability that comes with a large on-site diesel supply. For facilities in municipalities with reliable gas infrastructure, the case for gas is straightforward: the fuel is always there, and the maintenance interval on a gas engine is predictable.

Natural gas generator sets run from about 20 kW for small commercial installations up to 2,000 kW for large prime-power or combined-heat-and-power configurations. The Caterpillar G3500 series, Cummins GTA855, and Kohler gaseous sets are common platforms. Waukesha and Jenbacher (now INNIO) dominate the large industrial gas range. These aren't the same units as a home standby set. Commercial and industrial gas generators run on pipeline pressure, require gas pressure regulators sized to the engine, and need transfer switches rated for the load they're protecting.

We fund natural gas gensets from $50,000 up, new or used, B and C credit considered, with most transactions closing in one to two weeks. If you're sizing a new installation or replacing aging gas standby equipment, call us with the kW spec and we'll quote the same day.

The trade-off between gas and diesel is rarely about raw performance. Both fuel types deliver reliable power. Gas wins on total cost of ownership in specific situations: urban facilities where diesel fuel storage is restricted by fire code, operations with access to low-cost pipeline gas or natural gas supply contracts, and sites where generator runtime is moderate (not continuous 24/7 prime power, which wears gas engines faster than diesel).

Gas also burns cleaner than diesel, which matters in air quality management areas. California, the Northeast, and parts of the Great Lakes region have particulate rules that make new diesel standby installations increasingly difficult to permit for anything beyond true emergency use. A gas generator can run maintenance test hours and short prime-power stints with far fewer permitting complications.

The downside is vulnerability: if the gas main goes out in the same event that killed grid power (as happened in parts of Texas during the February 2021 freeze), a gas-only standby strategy leaves you dark. Facilities with true life-safety requirements often run dual-fuel or bi-fuel configurations that can bridge gas pressure loss by switching to diesel. For most commercial applications, though, simultaneous gas and grid failure is rare enough that gas-only standby is the dominant choice.

Buyers looking for even more flexibility sometimes consider dual-fuel generator systems that blend diesel and gas under load, reducing diesel consumption while maintaining compression-ignition reliability.

We finance natural gas generator sets as standalone equipment or as complete installations including the transfer switch, gas pressure regulator, exhaust system, and sound-attenuated enclosure. The generator itself is the collateral, and we lend against it whether it's being purchased from a dealer, sourced private-party from a closing facility, or acquired at auction.

Equipment eligibility is broad. Major OEM sets (CAT, Cummins, Kohler, Generac, Waukesha, Briggs Stratton Industrial) are straightforward. Generic or gray-market Chinese-manufactured units are harder to place because residual value and parts availability are uncertain. Stick with name-brand iron and the financing options stay wide open.

Used gas generators require the same scrutiny as used diesel: service records, spark plug replacement history on spark-ignited engines, and ideally a load-bank test before purchase. Gas engines that have been sitting inactive for more than a year may need carburetor work, injector cleaning, or exhaust valve reconditioning before they're operational. We can finance the purchase even if the unit needs minor reconditioning, but the purchase price should reflect that work. Used equipment financing is available for well-documented gas sets of most ages.

Application-only financing up to approximately $400,000 means no financial statements, no tax returns. Three months of business bank statements, a completed one-page application, and a purchase contract or dealer quote. That's the package for most natural gas generator transactions under the app-only threshold.

From application received to funding approval typically runs five to ten business days for clean files. Complications that slow things: incomplete bank statements, a gap in business banking history (cash-heavy businesses often have this), or equipment with no clear provenance. If you're buying from a private seller or at auction, have a bill of sale and any available service records ready before you apply.

For transactions above $400,000, we'll need business tax returns (typically two years), a balance sheet, and P&L statements. These deals still move faster than a bank: our target is two to three weeks from full package submission to funding, not two to three months.

Facilities in Houston, along the Gulf Coast, and across the Southeast often need gas generators permitted and installed before hurricane season. A May application with a May close is realistic if you come in with a complete file.

Natural gas generators rarely arrive as standalone purchases. A complete installation includes the automatic transfer switch, the gas pressure regulator and meter, concrete pad work, exhaust routing, and in urban installations a sound-attenuated enclosure. We can bundle soft costs into the deal when the project has a single general contractor and a clear scope of work. Ask us about total-project financing when you're ready to quote the installation.

Paralleling switchgear is another common add-on, particularly for facilities adding a second gas genset to an existing installation. Running two units in parallel doubles your capacity and provides N+1 redundancy. Paralleling controls, bus bars, and the synchronizer hardware are financeable alongside the generators themselves.

If your facility already has a natural gas set that's paid off, a sale-leaseback can convert that idle equity into working capital. We appraise the set, pay you market value, and lease it back. The generator stays on-site; the cash goes to work.

Send us the kW rating, your gas service pressure, new or used, and your project timeline. We'll respond with a quote the same business day. $50,000 minimum, B and C credit welcome.

Questions About Natural Gas Generator Financing

Straight answers before you send the generator file.

Can I finance a natural gas generator for a facility that also has solar panels?

Yes. The generator is financed as standalone equipment regardless of what else powers the facility. If you're integrating with a solar-plus-battery system, the ATS and interconnection equipment can often be bundled into the same transaction.

The gas set I want is at an auction. Can you fund an auction purchase?

We fund auction purchases regularly. You'll need the auction house's payment terms, a description of the unit, and any available documentation (serial number, hours, service records). Some auction houses require payment within 48 to 72 hours; let us know the deadline when you apply and we'll prioritize accordingly.

Is propane (LP) the same as natural gas for financing purposes?

The financing structure is identical. Propane generators use the same engines and similar controls; the fuel system differs. Propane has different pressure requirements and tank logistics but is financed the same way. If you're looking at a propane-specific installation, see our dedicated page on propane generator financing.

Can I refinance a natural gas generator I'm still paying on?

Yes, if you have equity in the unit. We'll appraise the set, pay off the existing lender, and restructure the remaining balance at current terms. If the set has appreciated (common for well-maintained large gas gensets) you may be able to pull cash out in the process.

My gas generator is for a combined heat and power application. Does that change the financing?

CHP generators finance the same as standby sets. The additional CHP components (heat exchangers, controls, utility interconnect) can sometimes be bundled into the deal if they're part of a single project. We've funded CHP installations in the 250 kW to 1,500 kW range. Let us know the full scope.
