Caterpillar C15 Generator Set Financing

Caterpillar C15 Generator Set Financing

Finance a Caterpillar C15 generator set. We fund CAT C15 gensets from $50k, new or used, B/C credit considered, application-only up to ~$400k.

The Caterpillar C15 diesel engine has built a long track record in trucking and industrial power, and the generator set version of that platform carries the same reputation for durability under continuous load. Configured as a genset, the C15 powers sets in the 300 kW to 400 kW range depending on the generator end and application rating. That output class is squarely in the sweet spot for mid-size commercial buildings, data center row power, industrial process facilities, and large telecom sites where a single reliable set handles the load and a second unit covers N+1 redundancy.

The C15 generator set is established collateral. It trades actively on the secondary market, parts and service are available through Caterpillar's dealer network across the country, and it holds value better than most equivalents from smaller manufacturers. All of that matters to lenders and it flows through to your deal: better terms, faster approvals, and lenders who don't need to spend a week researching what they're financing. We fund C15 generator sets from $50,000, new or used, and close most deals in one to two weeks.

C15 Generator Set: Output, Ratings, and Common Configurations

Caterpillar's C15 engine in generator configuration typically produces 300 kW to 400 kW at standby rating, with prime-power ratings running 10% to 15% lower depending on altitude and ambient temperature conditions. The C15 is a 15.2-liter, in-line six-cylinder diesel that has undergone multiple emissions upgrades over its production life, and older C15 gensets may be Tier 2 or Tier 3 while newer builds meet Tier 4 Final requirements. For stationary standby installations, Tier 4 Final compliance is required under most EPA and local air district rules, while Tier 2 and 3 units can still be used for emergency standby in specific regulatory contexts.

Standard genset configurations include the C15 engine, a Caterpillar SR4B or SR5 brushless alternator, a base-mounted fuel tank, and an enclosure rated for either indoor or outdoor installation. Buyers adding an automatic transfer switch, a sub-base fuel tank for extended run time, and a remote monitoring module add to the total project cost, all of which we can finance in a single note. Paralleling two C15 sets gives a facility 600 to 800 kW of available standby capacity with full N+1 redundancy, and the CAT paralleling controls on newer sets make synchronization straightforward.

CAT C15 gensets appear frequently in data center and healthcare facility applications precisely because the engine's track record in Class 8 trucks translates well to the hard-start, peak-load duty cycle of an emergency standby set. A technician who has maintained C15s in a fleet truck context can maintain the same engine in a genset, which reduces service complexity for facilities with on-site mechanics.

Buying New vs. Used C15 Generator Sets

New C15 generator sets from Caterpillar dealers carry full factory warranty, current Tier 4 Final compliance, and typically a 16- to 24-week lead time from order to delivery. Pricing for a new C15 genset with enclosure and a medium-duty ATS runs landing between $180k and $280k depending on configuration and the dealer's market. That puts most new C15 projects firmly in the application-only financing bracket with room to spare.

Used C15 gensets are a large part of what we finance in this model class. A C15 set with 3,000 hours and documented CAT dealer service history is a genuinely solid buy. The C15 engine is rated for 20,000-plus hours before major overhaul on a proper maintenance schedule, so a 3,000-hour unit is early in its working life. Used C15 gensets in good condition with clean service records can price at $80,000 to $140,000 depending on age, enclosure quality, and included accessories, making them accessible without sacrificing reliability. We finance used generator sets on the same one-to-two-week timeline as new, with three months of bank statements as the primary document.

How the C15 Financing Process Works

The process starts with your application plus recent generator-file bank records. For deals under roughly $400,000, that's the core package. We typically have a credit decision within 24 to 48 hours. From there, the lender issues a term sheet, you review and accept, and documents go out within a few business days. Funding happens once the lender receives clear title to the equipment (on new dealer purchases, a bill of sale and the invoice; on used private-party purchases, a bill of sale and UCC search confirming no prior liens). Total elapsed time from application to funded is typically seven to fourteen business days.

For new dealer purchases, we can often fund directly to the dealer, so you don't need to bring your own cash to close. For private-party purchases, we fund to the seller upon title transfer. The C15 genset serves as collateral for the note. We take a first-position UCC filing on the equipment.

If you already own a C15 genset free and clear and want to pull cash out of it, a cash-out refinance or sale-leaseback can do that. We assess current secondary-market value on the set based on age, hours, and condition, and advance a percentage of that value. The set stays on-site and in service throughout.

Questions About Caterpillar C15 Generator Set Financing

Straight answers before you send the generator file.

The C15 set I'm buying is Tier 2 emissions-rated. Is that financeable for a standby installation?

Tier 2 C15 sets are financeable for emergency standby applications in jurisdictions that permit pre-Tier 4 units for that use. Check your local air district rules first. Some jurisdictions require Tier 4 Final for any new installation, while others have exemptions for emergency standby hours below a certain annual threshold. We fund the machine regardless of tier; the compliance question is between you, the installer, and your local regulator.

Can I finance a C15 set I'm buying from a CAT dealer's used inventory vs. a private seller?

Both are fundable. Dealer used inventory typically comes with a condition inspection and some warranty, which lenders prefer. Private-party purchases go through the same process but we need a UCC search confirming no prior liens and a bill of sale. Dealer purchases usually close a few days faster because the documentation is cleaner.

We're buying two C15 sets to parallel for N+1 coverage. Does that go on one note or two?

One note covering both units is the cleanest structure. It gives you one payment, one close, and one set of documents. Both units go on the same security agreement. If you're buying the sets from different sellers or at different times, we can do two separate notes, but a single simultaneous purchase is easier.

My business has a strong operating history but my personal credit score dipped after a divorce. Does that affect the deal?

Personal credit is one factor, not the only one. We look at business cash flow, the business's operating history, and the collateral quality of the C15 set. A strong business with a rough personal situation often qualifies through our B and C credit program. Tell us the full picture and we'll tell you what's possible.

The project includes a CAT paralleling switchgear panel and a sub-base fuel tank. Can those go on the note too?

Yes. Related power infrastructure items go on the same note. ATS, paralleling switchgear, sub-base tank, and enclosure accessories all qualify. The total financed amount needs to hit the $50,000 floor, which any C15 genset project with accessories will clear.
